The Science of Feng Shui has three important basic tenets which say that everything is alive, everything is connected, and everything is changing. This also means that energy is changing continuously and has a strong influence on the human being and the occupants of a dwelling. According to Feng Shui, every object, space, and living thing has chi. Energy in the structure of a building, especially your home, has a strong influence, and the positioning of the doors, windows, and location of toilets have a major impact on the lives of the occupants. Hence, assigning the right compass sector for bathrooms/toilets and ensuring it does not occupy a positive sector of the home layout, lest it takes away the good CHI (energy), is important.

Q. Which colours should one go for while applying Feng Shui to their bathroom? Which colours should be avoided?

Colours which are classified as Yang (positive) colours are not advisable for toilet wall colours or décor. Colours like red, excess blue, gold are a taboo. Neutral colours like pale cream, off-white, and lighter shades of brown are acceptable. Avoid decorating the toilets excessively too as the energy of the toilet zone is said to be YIN hence it should not be enhanced further.

Q. In Feng Shui toilets are known to drain good energy. What rules should be followed for Feng Shui and toilets?

The position of the toilet with regard to the house layout, orientation of the commode, and its position are critical and play a vital role to ensure that toilets do not drain out positive energy. Do not have toilets close to the main door or directly facing the main door. Avoid toilet seats/commode sharing the kitchen stove area or the headboard of the bedroom.

Q. What is the most important aspect in Feng Shui when it comes to bathrooms?

The fact is that every corner of the home represents one of the desirable aspirations of living, hence one may well ask then, where the toilets of a home can be located since placing it anywhere seems to cause a problem of one kind or another. The fact is we need to look at it from the most sensitive to least sensitive portion of a building in terms of positioning and design the layout accordingly. It’s not surprising that in the past, toilets were always positioned away from the main building. However, modern-day living, all homes mostly have an en-suite toilet with a bedroom or toilets in common areas for the family hence it is important to analyse the layout of the home and arrive at a design concept to have toilets in less harmful sectors.

Q. Quick tips for people to make their bathroom Feng Shui friendly

a. When Toilets are in the Southwest sector, it represents flushing away all your marriage prospects. If you find you have a toilet placed in exactly the South-West corner of your home, and there is nothing you can do about it, then stop using this toilet altogether. Alternatively, having décor in red inside the toilet or suspending faceted crystals to enhance the earth chi are considered the easiest remedy.

b. If married and you perceive your marriage to be in trouble, the toilet in the Southwest could be the possible reason as they also represent the relationship and marriage sector of the home, and most importantly the matriarch’s corner. Having bamboo wind chimes painted black would help dissolve the bad chi due to this toilet position.

c. If your bed in the bedroom is sharing a wall with a Toilet commode/seat, move the bed to one of the other favourable directions but if you are unable to do so then move the headboard from that wall by 9 inches and also try to push away the bed to avoid direct “in-line” sleeping position with the commode.
